Audrey Hickman was a Choctaw Indian from Memphis, Tennessee, who came yearly to the fall Cherokee Indian Fair and Festival. Since 1914, communities on the Qualla Boundary at Cherokee, North Carolina have celebrated the heritage and traditions of the major southeastern tribes. The Women’s Fancy and Traditional Dance Competition is a highlight of each festival. Held at the Cherokee Cultural and Ceremonial Grounds, authenticity of dress is an important aspect of the competition.
