Near Waynesville, North Carolina, I came upon an overshot mill built ca. 1850. It was the handiwork of carpenter and millwright William C. Francis who grew up in Johnson City, Tennessee. We learned that in 1828, William removed to Haywood County, North Carolina and soon afterwards married Mary (“Polly”) Allmon, daughter of wealthy county resident Gideon Allmon.
In 1839, Gideon sold to his son-in-law William Francis a 268 acre tract upon which the mill still stands and remains in the ownership of descendants. That tract plus adjoining lands William purchased became known as Francis Cove.
