The landmark Ship Motel and Restaurant built in 1923 in rural Sommerset County, Pennsylvania on Route 30, overlooked three states and seven counties. In 1980, when Phyllis and I traveled the entire Appalachian chain of mountains, we stopped for refreshment at that restaurant on July 4th. It was closed. In the restaurant’s roadside window was an early colonial flag juxtaposed with a contemporary beer sign – real Americana.
We have heard that the Ship Motel and Restaurant burned to the ground only recently.
